ID Card & Passport application

This service allows Rwandans to apply for the E-Passport and National ID.

The Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration (DGIE) provides three types of passports: ordinary, service, and diplomatic. Please read and review the document below before proceeding.

Procedure:

  1. Apply on https://irembo.gov.rw/home/citizen/all_services
  2. Book an appointment with the Rwanda High Commission to collect biometrics after receiving the message from DGIE via the Booking Appointment window.
  3. If you wish to have your e-Passport or National ID mailed to you when it arrives, please purchase a return shipping label (not an envelope) from UPS, DHL, Canada Post, or FedEx before your appointment.

              - Each applicant must provide their own shipping label (one per person, even within the same household).

              - To get a label:

                   1. Visit your chosen courier’s website (UPS, DHL, Canada Post, or FedEx).

                   2. Create and pay for a prepaid return shipping label with your mailing address as the destination.

                   3. Download the PDF of the label.

                    4. Email the PDF to the Rwanda High Commission at ambaottawa2020@gmail.com before your appointment.

Processing Time:

  • 8 to 12 business days to have a response from Immigration (DGIE)
  • 2 to 3 weeks for you to receive the passport/ID after your biometrics appointment.

MAKE SURE TO READ THE STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS IN THE DOCUMENT BELOW BEFORE YOU PROCEED WITH YOUR APPLICATION.

  1. You will need an ID before you renew your passport. If you have lost your ID but have a photocopy of it use it for your passport application in the meantime, but plan to reapply for your ID.
  2. If you lost your ID, go to Irembo and look for a replacement of National ID diaspora.
  3. Make sure you renew your passport ahead of time at least 6 months before expiry, especially if you or your children have immigration related upcoming expired documents or new applications.
